Lockdown on weak side?

Hey guys. So as a white belt I sometimes catch a person's left leg with my lockdown, taking me out of their side control. I'm not used to doing lockdown on that leg though.

Do you guys master the lockdown on both legs? What would you do if you HAD to get a lockdown on the side you're not good at?

Gotta drill both sides. My weak side isn't as in depth and versatile as my strong side, however I do have at least 3 solid goto's on my weak side.

Yeah, the lockdown is something that you definitely should have on both sides. There will be many times during your rolls when you can't pick what leg you catch. My strong side is way better for sure, but I have had to catch weak side electric chairs in competition multiple times.

I do lockdown pathways on my good side and play 1/2 butterfly on weak side so I can go for anything from deep half, full guard, leg locks or even move them to capture lockdown on my good side. Been playing a lot of single leg X lately and my weak side is my strong side for that position.

Throughout the process of working your strong side and leveling that up your overall understanding of the principles and concepts that actually make lockdown effective go up. As that knowledge increases it becomes significantly easier to get those reps on the weak side. It really does suck to be in a situation where you could have worked a technique you know but were on the wrong side. Gotta go get those physical reps.

Drill it and try to use it. Had a competition loss by two points last year due to getting stuck in weak side lockdown and not being able to get to anything useful - learned that lesson the hard way.

I would second the above too; I play alot of half guard myself and I always try to drill everything both sides (I use the quote "never know if you face a lefty").

I personally love non dominant side lockdown. Guys tend to be not as used to it when rolling. Weak side EC sneaks up on people.
