Sports Science actually did a piece on chokes (from ESPN). They had BJ Penn performing the choke and the host was out in a few seconds but they determined BJs full strength RNC only cut off 13% of the blood flow to the brain, which is enough to cause you to pass out. So your brain is still getting oxygen, just not enough to keep you conscious. Based on that alone, either this guy had something else going on in his body, the choke was on for a lot longer, or my best guess is that this guy had a trachea choke going on compressing his windpipe which could have stopped his breathing as opposed to strangling his carotids. Cause with 87% of oxygen still going to your brain, you're not going to die from a proper RNC, even if it's held for 20 seconds. The brain begins to die at about 6 minutes of total oxygen deprivation.
