Polishing Warm Ups H
If you've studied my rolls, you know that the open guards are not my go2's. But that doesn't mean I don't have tremendous respect for those styles, how could you not really, just look at the Miyao twins, Marcelo, Rafe etc. But you know me, it's always the clinch first, open second. If I can't get my clinch game going then I fall back on the open guards. The reason for this is that the open guards are not good go2 guards when someone is trying to punch and elbow you. Yes, I know I shouldn't be too concerned with that seeing that I don't do MMA, but nonetheless, I am obsessed with having a jiu jitsu style that will translate best when strikes are involved, shoot me
I have to admit I didn't think the berimbolo would translate to nogi very well, there seemed to be too much reliance on belt holding and collar and sleeve pulling, plus there wasn't very much footage of anyone doing it in live sparring sessions or competition a few years ago. But you know what? It does translate nogi, AND it's pretty damn bad ass to do. This is a very ninja-esque technique that looks just as cool as it feels executing it, and although it isn't as effective nogi it still works quite beautifully, again, just watch the Miyao twins.
If you are doing MMA, spiral and DLR are crucial when wrestlers take you down but don't want to get on the ground with you, when they want you on your back while they "stand" over you throwing bombs, not letting you stand up. That's how Jake Rosholt beat Matt Horwich in their rematch. Since then Horwich has mastered the spiral and DLR transition for the next time one of his opponents tries to implement the same strategy. Rubber guard and lockdown half won't work when your opponent is standing over you, you must master spiral, dlr AND X-guard.
Plus we all know now that deep half works in MMA as well. Not the deep half clinch so much, but slingshotting thru deep half is what has been working very well in MMA, that's why the slingshot deep half sweep is included in warm ups H.
This is a VERY important set of warm ups that will guarantee mastery of these crucial open guards within a few years whether you're a clincher or not, all you gotta do is show up to class consistently and take the warm ups seriously.
Also in this packed episode are bonus techs from 10p Vista moon head Ryan Fortin and 10p Riverside moon head Randle Dolf, plus EPIC competition footage from Vista's Geo Martinez, San Fran's Alex Canders, Richmond's Adam Fritz, plus Big Neuter, Dr Greenthumb and much more!
Thank you very much for the support!!
