Alright...that is obviously an older cinder block. It's probably been sitting outside in the weather and has become weak. It's already partially broken, undoubtedly from being old and moved around. We use cinder blocks to prop open our doors where they are in the sun and the rain. After awhile, they become so brittle that they will literally almost fall apart just from picking them up and sitting them back down.
That, or he has specifically went to a concrete plant and ordered first or end run of the bricks which are usually higher sand content. This is what a lot of breaking "experts" do to get breakable bricks.
