I just competed about a month and a bit ago with Grappling Industries, and they follow IBJJF rules I believe, and even at whitebelt I was allowed to perform "Submission by spreading the legs" and pulled off a number of Electric chair and Electric sweeps.
No issue that day with the ref.

Yeah the rules say it's fine but it depends how the ref interprets it.

    Yup.

One of my guys subbed a dude via ec. He was about to get dq'd. This just happened to be the one time Eddie was in Biloxi, MS helping Alan Belcher. I looked at the ref, pointed to Eddie, then the ref legitimized the sub. Eddie didn't really do anything but be Eddie , but it was epic on our end.

Ec is a hip manipulation. So it's not a spine lock or knee attack. It is technically legal under most rulesets. But.. It really does depend on whoever is reffing the match. What he says goes and it's silly to argue anything outside of worlds or Abu Dhabi.

I think paying 100$ to compete makes it not silly to argue about it.

Agreed. I always plead my case especially when its legal. Even put the ref in it before to dhow him the knee w asn't attacked. But sometimes refs are just stubborn and biased as hell. But yeah. Not silly.
