Seriously though, asking Jiu Jitsu practicioners what is best for self-defence, especially rather zealous ones like the ones on this board (which I'm certainly not implying is a bad thing, mind you), will not give you an objective answer, just like you will have everyone telling you to go do judo if you ask the question on a judo forum. Self-defence is a very, very broad term, and different situations require different approaches. Personally, my favorite self-defence sport is sprinting. You should probably read some stuff over at www.nnsd.com, which is rather intimidating in its vastness, but very, very thorough and makes a lot of sense.
You're right. The best fights are the ones that don't happen, outside of the cage that is =D. For example, for as awesome as Bruce Lee, or GSP, or Anderson Silva were and are, in a real fight in public, nothing's to stop someone from using a bottle, knife or gun on someone, or stop 2 or more people from jumping on one guy. Sprinting or a gun works very well in that situation =D. That being said, it's a very good thing to know how to choke someone so that they become a nullified threat.

Judo is awesome for self-defense, especially for women. I think if you want to learn a martial art for that you should cross train in Judo and BJJ and maybe learn some nasty street techniques like the eye gouge or the Twister.
