For a beginner sprinting and A 12 gauge will work wonders. I'm a fan of self offense instead of self defense. Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai will help because these days you go to the ground in a street fight someone will always stomp on your head so you want to be well versed in stand up and ground situations. Good Luck

i think for a woman jiu-jitsu is fantastic for self-defense. Worst case scenario for any girl would have to be a sexual assault which for the most part would involve you on the ground. So being able to choke someone unconscious has to be a plus. But i'd still learn the eye gouges, ball strikes, and throat dismantling techniques too.

I train kyokushin for stand up and jiujitsu for if it goes to the ground, there is no magical perfect martial art and no matter what you train you're not goingto be an expert over night. Whatever you choose is going to take time and dedication. Make sure you choose an art with hard sparing and live resistance, there area lot of mcdojos out there that pretty much let you buy a black belt with no effort but a black belt isn't going to save you in a fight.

Any martial art/self-defense that you pick is a good one, but I like jiu-jitsu because at the last 30 minutes of class you get to practice the effectiveness of what you learned. And its not all about kicking ass but to maybe restrain the persons ( ie,hotels, etc.)lol until help arrives.Go try a few different arts until you find what you like and enjoy.I've done jits for a year now and just tried muay thai for a couple weeks and just quit muay thai cuz I dont enjoy it but i'll stick with jits for life. good luck.
