I'm a youtubejitsu guy. I love tech videos. When I was actively rolling, I'd hit a lot of my YouTube stuff. But I didn't get good until I just focused on class material. YouTube should be more for fun and brainstorming. Nothing can replace the value of a quality instructor and mat time.

    Ranking online

I apologise for possibly asking a stupid question but Im kinda new. Why do people want belts? If you go to a tournament you'd have to roll against guys with the same belt right? Seems like you'd want to stay at a certain belt until you can fairly easily take out competitors at that level before getting promoted. How many no-gi tournaments have divisions based on belt? I have a nylon belt and a leather belt.
I wanted to know how I should go about getting officially ranked in the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system, I've been studying and drilling your techniques for quite some time now with the aid of your books and DVD but there are not 10th Planet

you can submit a series of videos for ranking or go to a moon (10th planet location)

    • 10 Videos - competition wins with a 10th Planet patch, posted on your 10th Planet profile (you can have other school patches too).

    • Plus 5, 10th Planet technique videos.
    - 1 of all the half guard u know
    - 1 of all the rg u know
    - 1 of all the twister u know
    - 1 of all the deep hook transitions u know
    - 1 of all the passes u know

    all unedited in one swoop.

    • You gotta show me how much you know without looking at notes. Then you get a promotion, blue, purple or brown.
    • Every promotion no matter what color will require the same 15 videos. Naturally the 5 technique videos will be critiqued a lot harder for a purple than a blue, or for a brown than a purple.
10th Planet head instructors that are non-black belts can only rank their students to blue. All Nibiru warriors, enrolled in official 10th Planet schools run by non-black belts, who want to get their purple or brown must be first recommended by their instructor and then submit 5 technique videos to this site. 1 of all the half guard u know, 1 of all the rg u know, 1 of all the twister u know, 1 of all the deep hook transitions u know, and 1 of all the passes u know, all unedited in one swoop. You gotta show me how much you know without looking at notes.

eddie wrote the above, so he thinks its legit, it does require 10 comp videos. I'm surprised eddie offers this method of belt testing but then he would know better than us.

In my opinion to gain Anything past a blue from videos is a pretty daunting task. Not saying its impossible, but it'll be rough. He's said a bunch to make a journey out to HQ and roll with the belt ranks that you are, so if you're a blue looking for a purple, you'd probably have to smash a majority of his blues that are there, and then youd have to hold your own with his purples. I'd just make the journey to Cali if I were you or to the nearest Moon.

I've learned card tricks and cooking online. I've taught photography online. There is nothing special about jiu jitsu that suggests it can't be learned online. Mastering the System and MGinAction and even, Gracie University are excellent sources of jiu jitsu education.

The Gracie video test requires that you know 36 techniques and each technique has 4 slices. As anyone who's watched a Rener Gracie video knows, the techniques are very detailed. And, the 4 slices must be performed in a specific order. The only way to do the techniques is to work with a partner that has practiced the lessons with you. Also, the Gracie Combatives videos make it clear that you are supposed to be practicing fight simulations with a partner on a regular basis. If you are doing the curriculum properly, you will absolutely learn jiu jitsu.

As for grading online by having a instructor who doesn't know you watch a video of you performing the techniques, I don't have a problem with it. One could argue that this is a less biased form of grading than what happens in a normal dojo. The only investment you have to make in Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a $150 DVD set and they will grade you to blue belt. It's not like they are making a ton of money off you. The average school is getting like $150 per month from the student and they know him and they like him as a person and as a paying customer and want him to continue training. Isn't that a more biased promotion? Don't we all know a dude who has gotten a belt just because everybody likes him and he's been training a long time and he tries really hard? That wouldn't happen with online grading where the instructor doesn't know you and isn't thinking, "Hey, if we don't promote this guy, we are going to lose $150 per month".

No, I don't think you should be able to get a black belt online. But Blue Belt, absolutely. Purple? Maybe.

IMO, all belts are for is a ticket to compete in a higher skilled division and a courtesy to your training partners so they have an idea of what to expect before you roll with someone new. so as far as I'm concerned, as long as you can hold your own against a certain rank, I personally wouldn't care if you even promoted yourself (although obviously the majority of other bjj practitioners would care lol I'm just saying I wouldn't).

I've been watching videos of BJJ and 10th Planet stuff for so long and I still love to watch techs. But I have no drilling partners so its hard for me to say if you can get a belt from online. I would say going to a class/personal lessons makes my game advance more then anything else I could do. Now there are BJJ schools everywhere so go somewhere if you want the belt that bad. I live in SoCal so I understand long drives and traffic, I even have an anxiety disorder but when I found the right coach everything started clicking and there is nothing better then your teacher standing over you during drills and making sure your techs are perfect to every little detail. I've hit a lot of sweeps and subs in the past using things I watched online or book/dvd like the rubber guard. Now that I train with a soon to be Hotbox I can't get away with it like I did before and learning the techs I saw online in class you can ask so many questions and continue until you get it correct.

I want to add im blasted so if you understood that you probably are too.
