Grabbing pants is a tremendous advantage to pass guard, especially for someone who trains in the gi regularly with good grips. i can't really put an emphasis on the control someone like Royler could obtain. Eddie trained in the gi for a long time and definitely is aware of this so I'm sure will address the situation.

I have all the confidence in the world in our master. I'm just excited to see Eddie win, even with Royal having "an advantage" in having handles, to prove once and for all that Eddie is the superior jujitsu practitioner & that the best man won the first time they faced off as well.

I'm curious why Eddie decided to switch to shorts/spats in the first place?

to avoid getting his pants grabbed.

So then was there previous discussion or agreement about this prior to Eddie changing his mind?

Eddie: Can I wear gi pants?

Royler: As long as you don't change your mind

Then I assume it went like this:

Eddie: never mind, I want shorts and spats. Don't want to have my pants grabbed.

Royler: I'll sue or back out of the fight.

Is that first part a direct quote or are you being hypothetical?

Direct quote per Eddie's explanation further back in the thread. The second half is my assumption of how the rest transpired. But the first part is true.

Gi pants were not part of the contract so it was like a verbal thing. The understanding that pants grabbing was part of the deal was never discussed. This is a fact.

Eddie changed his mind. This is a fact.

From what I understand he changed his mind on a whim. Maybe just to avoid the possibility of a quick pants grab that the ref may ignore. This is my theory.

Royler called his lawyer. This is a fact.

This adds to the story. My friends were making it out as if Royler's lawyer came out of nowhere with the demand to wear gi pants after Eddie publicized that he was wearing spats when, in fact, Eddie was reneging on a verbal agreement. That makes more sense.
